Notes: Serum aldosterone levels are affected by the sodium intake and the patient’s position; either upright or supine. The upright value should be about 2 to 5 times the supine value obtained from recumbent patient in early am before arising from bed. If an upright specimen is collected the patient should be upright (seated or standing) for at least 30 minutes. Please record the patient’s position when the blood was drawn.
Dietary sodium levels during the period prior to testing can affect aldosterone levels. Patients on a low sodium diet will also have a 2 to 5 fold increase in aldosterone levels over those on a normal sodium diet. Reference intervals are based on the clinician’s verification that the patient has been on a normal sodium diet.

Longer storage of whole blood samples at room temperature has been found to increase homocysteine concentration in the plasma.
